Port Macquarie police officers may have to operate from Kempsey until February 2028 as their station undergoes a redevelopment.
A spokesperson for NSW Police said a demountable will be installed at the existing station to maintain a “24-hour police response” in Port Macquarie.
Ongoing presence: Police say the temporary station will prove a “visible police presence in the CBD and support ongoing frontline policing operations”.
“General Duties police will continue to have a strong presence in the area,” the spokesperson said.
Workplace adjustment: Work began at the station, on the corner of Hay Street and Sunset Parade in the Port Macquarie CBD, on Tuesday.
Port Macquarie’s highway patrol officers are set to relocate from next week, with the majority of remaining staff expected to follow in late September.
Site selection: It is 50km from Port Macquarie police station to Kempsey police station. Laurieton and Wauchope stations are closer to Port Macquarie, but the spokesperson said Kempsey was selected due to “size, capacity and existing infrastructure”.
They said that police vehicles “also operate as mobile workspaces”.
Community benefits: The $20 million upgrade of Port Macquarie station, which was built in 1991, was announced in 2025.
“The project will deliver a modern, fit-for-purpose facility that will enhance the working environment for police employees,” the spokesperson said.
