Work begins on Cattai Wetlands reopening after months of delays

Nature lovers have been excitedly awaiting news of progress.

Work has commenced to reopen the Cattai Wetlands, almost 14 months after the devastating flood event which closed it indefinitely.

The one-in-500-year flood in May 2025 saw areas of the MidCoast receive more than 400mm of rain in two days, with five fatalities confirmed throughout northern NSW.

The Cattai Wetlands, located 20 minutes north of Taree, has been closed ever since due to extensive damage to boardwalks.

Popular local site: The wetlands, located on more than 500 hectares of reclaimed farmland, is home to more than 180 species of animals.

The site is particularly popular for bird watching and walking trails.

Project progress: A spokesperson for MidCoast Council told the Mid North Coaster that repair works were delayed while waiting for insurance and flood recovery funding which “was not forthcoming”.

Funding from the council’s operational budget was secured in April 2026 and a contractor was engaged, who commenced work last week.

  • “Repair works are likely to take several months weather permitting. The facility will be reopened once all works are complete,” the spokesperson said.
