Damper buns to homemade relish: Bacon and egg roll reviews

Three bacon and egg rolls to try in Kempsey Shire

The classic bacon and egg roll is found on most cafe menus across the Mid North Coast. Whether you’re grabbing one on the way to work, enjoying a post surf filler, or grabbing a cure after a late night out, the B&E remains a popular choice.

The brunch item has turned into a cheeky weekend treat for my partner and I, so I’ve reviewed a handful (pun intended) of our regular spots – you might like the sound of one and try it yourself.

What I look in a B&E

Like art, food preferences are subjective. I personally like:

  • An over-easy egg. All the white must be cooked with a runny yolk

  • Bacon that isn't cooked so much it might break a tooth

  • Extra saucy, always

  • A soft bun that still retains structural integrity

  • Enough filling to satisfy my hunger and get bang for my buck, but not so much it can’t be contained and end up in my lap

🥓 The South Kempsey Corner Store, South Kempsey

The damper bun is a winner.

The Corner Store uses a soft damper bun for their B&E which is a big tick from me. The egg is almost always runny on the inside and bacon cooked just enough. Bonus points to this place for swapping BBQ sauce for homemade relish at no extra cost. This B&E can be on the smaller side, so I’d recommend adding a hashbrown if you feel like treating yourself to make it extra filling and extra delicious.

💰Price: $10 for the B&E, $5 for the hashbrown

🍳 Sixty Degrees Cafe,  South West Rocks

This B&E is never short on bacon. You could almost take half off for a second meal. It could even do with a second egg to balance the B with the E, but I’m not complaining. The amount of BBQ sauce Sixty Degrees provides is excellent and the egg is more often than not slightly runny. It comes on a sesame seed bun, which is a classic touch.

💰 Price: $13.50

🥓 Point Break Cafe, Crescent Head

This cafe at Crescent Head’s point is perfect for a post-surf snack. The bun holds together well, you can ask for relish if you prefer, and it’s filling. It tastes how you’d expect it to – it’s a classic, no frills, yummy B&E. Plus, you can’t beat the ocean view.

💰 Price: $12
